Antivirus programs are designed to keep the computer protected against all sort of malware but there are some tools that focus on detecting and eliminating only a particular type of threats.
Such is the case of DarkSpy Anti-Rootkit, a product bent on detecting and removing rootkits, which are generally malicious files that gain privileged access to the computer.
Installing the DarkSpy Anti-Rootkit on the system is not a tough job, but the procedure might not work on newer operating systems because the application has been designed for Windows XP and the efforts to bring it to the modern age seem to have reached a halt.
The interface features a simple window with a few tabs listing various resources currently running on the system.
The program shows all the processes that are active and it highlights the hidden ones; for any of them there is the possibility to terminate them.
Driver modules are also displayed and, just like in the case of processes, the hidden ones are marked for easier detection.
In the case of files the product works fairly in the same way: highlights the hidden entries and allows you to delete them.
With registry hives things are a bit different. DarkSpy Anti-Rootkit offers the possibility to save the hive for any of the listed keys and, if an infection makes its way onto the system, it can restore the good version.
DarkSpy Anti-Rootkit is quite rudimentary and it does not run an analysis of the running resources in order to determine the legitimacy of the files. Unless the user is more experienced, this could lead to false positives.
