Most users are aware of the importance of having an antivirus solution protecting their computer against all sorts of digital attacks. Settling for one of the alternative on the market can be a difficult choice, especially since vendors come up with capable free versions of their products.
MscanX AntiVirus is a no-install, simple antivirus product that relies not just on signatures to catch malicious files but also on heuristic technology, in order to catch threats that haven not yet been categorized.
It sports a simple interface with menus rolling down in the left part of the screen, allowing access to the scanning function as well as to a few tools available in the application.
Scan options allow checking of the currently active items as well as the data present on all the drives available to the system. Unfortunately, during our tests the program could not complete the short verification routine as it became unresponsive.
The utilities accompanying MscanX AntiVirus include a process manager that enables terminating the activity of the item as well as restarting or pausing it. Another utility is designed to prevent drives from getting infected through the Autorun.inf attack vector.
Testing MscanX AntiVirus revealed that the product has stability issues and it also erroneously labelled plenty of legitimate files as suspicious.
Some of the options are restricted for the customers of the premium edition and one of them is updating the database; the others touch on the protection of the registry, although there is no documentation to explain the procedure and its effects.
Antivirus solutions have become easier to use and have grown in security layers in order to keep up with the latest trends in terms of malware. In contrast, the development of MscanX Antivirus has frozen to a stage that makes it irrelevant in the fight against current threats.
